FearFree Certified Groomers

Our Fear Free Certified Dog Groomers have completed formal Fear Free education focused on reducing fear, anxiety, and stress during grooming and handling.

In simple terms, it means the groomer has been trained to look beyond “getting the job done” and instead ask:

  • Is this dog coping, or just tolerating?

  • What signs of fear, stress, pain, or overwhelm is this dog showing?

  • How can I change my handling, the environment, the pace, or the grooming plan so this dog feels safer?

  • What Fear Free grooming usually involves?

A Fear Free Certified Groomer is trained in things like:

  • Canine body language and stress signals

  • Recognising fear, shutdown, conflict, and early signs of distress

  • Low-stress handling and restraint alternatives

  • Using positive reinforcement rather than force

  • Modifying the groom to suit the dog’s emotional and physical capacity

  • Understanding when a dog needs breaks, shorter sessions, or a different plan

  • Making the salon environment more predictable and less overwhelming

What it means in practice?

For example, instead of forcing a terrified dog through nail clipping, drying, or clipping because “it has to be done,” a Fear Free groomer may:

  • Break the appointment into shorter sessions

  • Use treats and desensitisation

  • Change equipment or handling style

  • Stop the groom if the dog is no longer coping

  • Recommend a vet check if pain, anxiety, or medical issues may be contributing

What it does not mean?

  • It doesn’t mean the dog will magically love grooming.

  • It doesn’t mean every groom is perfect or fully completed.

  • And it doesn’t just mean “the salon is calm” or “the groomer is nice.”

It means the groomer has specific education and a professional framework for prioritising the dog’s emotional welfare, not just the haircut.
