Grooming senior and geriatric dogs...

Grooming Care for Senior Dogs...

Anyone who has ever shared their life with a dog knows the hardest truth: dogs don’t live nearly as long as we wish they would. As they age, their needs change—and grooming becomes not just about appearance, but about comfort, health, and quality of life.

Senior and geriatric dogs often have special grooming requirements. Depending on their breed, coat type, and overall health, regular grooming remains essential for hygiene and wellbeing. Services such as nail trimming, bathing, and coat maintenance help prevent discomfort, infections, matting, and mobility issues.

Special Considerations When Grooming Older Dogs

As dogs age, they may experience arthritis, reduced mobility, vision or hearing loss, sensitive skin, lumps, dental issues, or chronic medical conditions. Because of this, senior dogs benefit from:

  • Shorter, more frequent grooming sessions to reduce fatigue and stress

  • Gentle handling and slow movements to support sore joints and limited mobility

  • Non-slip surfaces and supportive positioning for safety and comfort

  • Coat styles that are practical and easy to maintain, rather than purely cosmetic

  • Extra patience and one-on-one care, allowing the groomer to work at the dog’s pace

Comfort is always the priority. Grooming sessions are adapted to suit each dog’s physical and emotional needs, ensuring the experience is calm, safe, and positive.

Grooming With Compassion and Experience

Dogs have been part of every stage of my life. From childhood companions, to loyal family dogs, rescues, and seniors who supported me through life’s most challenging moments, each dog has taught me the importance of care, patience, and empathy.

Those experiences shaped my understanding of how deeply dogs support us—and why they deserve the same level of care in return, especially in their later years. It’s this bond that ultimately led me to become a dog groomer, with a strong focus on senior and special-needs dogs.

Caring for Dogs at Every Life Stage

Just like people, dogs’ needs change as they age. Grooming should evolve with them—always prioritising comfort, dignity, and wellbeing.

No matter how old your dog is, their grooming needs still matter. With the right approach, grooming can continue to be a gentle, supportive part of their care routine throughout their golden years.
