Helping your #dog to enjoy #grooming

As #groomers, we frequently encounter #anxious #dogs who may exhibit #reactivity or #aggression. This #behavior often stems from a lack of early #training or negative #experiences at home or with previous #groomers.

#Grooming a #dog is complex, as each dog is unique and reacts differently to the #groom and the groomer. Some #dogs may prefer a male or female #groomer, while others are more affected by the time of day, the presence of other #dogs, or experiences leading up to the #appointment.

To help your #anxious or #nervous dog, consistent pre- and post-grooming practices are essential. #Grooming is a partnership between the #dog, the #groomer, and you, the #owner! #Groomers aim to make #grooming enjoyable for your #dog. While they may never love being away from you, we can work together to ensure the most positive experience possible. This might involve scheduling #appointments for quieter times or when we can dedicate more attention to your #dog. #Puppies, #senior #dogs, and #rescues may require special attention and #handling techniques.

In our experience, carrying your #dog into the #salon can create the impression that they need protection, which is counterproductive. Instead, confidently walk your #dog into the #salon on a well-fitted #collar or #harness and #lead. Use an assured and kind tone, avoiding baby talk or coddling. Ensure the #collar or harness is secure to prevent escapes, especially after a haircut when #collars may be looser.

Similar to dropping children off at school, a quick and #calm handover minimizes #stress for your #dog. We will conduct a brief consultation to discuss the #grooming plan and then quickly introduce them to their surroundings, allowing them time to settle in before the session.

For #dogs that struggle with #grooming, at-home training is crucial. Daily touching and #desensitization exercises after walks can help normalize the sensations associated with grooming. Consistency is key to achieving the best results.

We avoid rushing #dogs during #grooming, especially those who are #nervous, #senior, or #puppies, as it is unpleasant for both the #groomer and the dog. Please allow ample time for drop-off and pick-up to avoid adding stress. #Dogs respond differently to various individuals, and some may need to wait for a suitable #groomer.

Working with live #animals means that our schedule can sometimes be unpredictable. We appreciate your understanding if we require a little extra time with your #dog. Please refrain from popping in or waiting outside, as this can further unsettle your #dog.

In summary:

*   Inform us of your #dog's #anxiety beforehand and share any successful strategies from the past, especially if they are new to our studio.

*   Confidently and quickly walk your #dog into the #salon. If you don’t live nearby, consider parking a short distance away to allow your #dog to relax and relieve themselves before the appointment.

*   Drop off your #dog #calmly and quickly, treating it as a normal #routine.

*   Understand that we may need extra time for a more enjoyable, #unhurried #appointment, so please wait for our confirmation before arriving.

*   Pick up your #dog quietly and calmly, avoiding any fuss. Remember, your #behavior teaches your #dog how to respond.
