To shave or not to shave during summer weather?

✂️ Should You Shave Your Dog? What Every Dog Owner Needs to Know...

This is a common question many #dogowners face—especially during the warmer months. The answer isn’t one-size-fits-all. It depends on several factors including your dog’s #breed, #coat type, age, lifestyle, environment, and grooming history.

🐩 Breeds That Benefit from Regular Clipping

#Hypoallergenicdogs such as #poodles, #oodles, #shihtzus, #maltese, and their mixed breeds have continuously growing coats. These dogs require consistent #grooming regardless of the season. Regular #clipping is essential to prevent painful #matting and potential #skinissues, which can lead to infections and discomfort.

🐕 Breeds That Should NOT Be Shaved

#Doublecoated #dogs—like #pomeranians, #huskies, #germanshepherds, #corgis, #pugs, #chihuahuas, and #dachshunds—have coats designed to regulate body temperature and protect them from both heat and cold. Their #hair grows to a certain length and stops naturally.

Shaving these breeds can cause:

  • ❌ Irreversible coat damage

  • ❌ Softer, thicker, curlier hair prone to #matting

  • ❌ Skin irritation, rashes, and bald spots (#alopecia)

  • ❌ Overheating due to loss of natural insulation

Contrary to popular belief, shaving these breeds does not help them stay cooler. In fact, it removes their ability to regulate temperature effectively. And no—shaving doesn’t reduce #shedding. It just results in shorter, still-shedding hairs.

🏥 When Shaving May Be Necessary

There are exceptions. #Clipping may be required for:

  • Post-surgical care

  • Chronic skin conditions

  • #Elderlydogs with mobility or hygiene challenges

In such cases, always consult your #veterinarian or #groomer for the safest approach.

☀️ Summer Grooming Tips

For most dogs, especially double-coated breeds, the best summer care includes:

When in doubt, always seek personalized advice from a trusted #groomer.
