Winter Grooming for Dogs in Bayside Melbourne: Why It Matters...

Living and working in St Kilda, I regularly connect with fellow #dogowners across southeast Melbourne—especially in the beautiful bayside suburbs. Whether it’s a chat on the street, a stroll through Alma Park, or a play session in Albert, Caulfield, Elsternwick, or Fawkner Park, one thing’s clear: we’re lucky to have so many dog-friendly spaces nearby!

Port Phillip and surrounding areas are among the most densely populated in Victoria—and they also boast some of the highest rates of dog ownership in the state. With so many pups in our community, one question comes up often during the colder months:

❄️ “Does My Dog Really Need Grooming in Winter?”

It’s a fair concern. Melbourne’s winter brings icy sea breezes and chilly blizzards, especially near the beach. Understandably, pet parents wonder if grooming might leave their dogs vulnerable to the cold.

But here’s the catch: if your dog is a #hypoallergenic breed—like a #poodlemix, #maltese, or #shihtzu—they don’t shed like other dogs. Their hair keeps growing, and without regular grooming, it tangles with older hair that doesn’t fall out. Add in wet weather, sandy paws, and muddy terrain, and you’ve got a recipe for serious #matting and potential skin issues.

🧼 Why Winter Grooming Is Essential

  • 🧊 Your dog’s coat offers protection, but only if it’s clean and well-maintained.

  • 🐾 Without regular brushing and grooming, mats can form and trap moisture, dirt, and bacteria.

  • 🌱 By spring, neglected coats often require full shaving—September is famously “shave-it-off” month in the grooming world!

🐩 Grooming Tips for Bayside Dogs

  • 📅 Book regular grooming sessions—even in winter.

  • 🧽 Brush your dog frequently, especially after walks.

  • 🚿 Keep their coat clean and dry to prevent tangles and skin irritation.

If you live near the beach, this is especially important. The combination of salt air, sand, and moisture can wreak havoc on your dog’s coat if left unmanaged.

So go ahead—don’t hesitate! Regular grooming is a smart investment in your dog’s comfort, health, and happiness. Your future springtime self (and your groomer) will thank you!
