What Is Fluff Drying (and Why Does Your Dog Look Like a Teddy Bear After Grooming)?
Do you ever wonder how your Poodle or Poodle cross (Oodle) comes home from the groomer looking like fairy floss or a marshmallow? That soft, plush, cloud-like finish isn’t magic—it’s called fluff drying.
Fluff drying is a professional drying and brushing technique that straightens the coat, removes hidden tangles, and helps prevent matting. It’s essential for single-coated, non-shedding breeds such as Poodles and Oodles and plays a huge role in healthy coat maintenance between grooming appointments.
Why Fluff Drying Matters
Allowing a curly or wavy coat to air-dry causes the hair to tighten, curl, and twist—this is one of the fastest ways mats form. Fluff drying:
Separates the coat and removes moisture evenly
Reduces friction and matting
Makes brushing easier and more effective
“Resets” the coat after bathing
Creates that fluffy, soft finish everyone loves
Beyond looks, fluff drying helps maintain skin health and makes future grooming much more comfortable for your dog.
How to Fluff Dry Your Dog at Home
Step 1: Towel Dry Gently
After bathing, use an absorbent microfibre towel to gently squeeze excess water from the coat.Do not rub—rubbing causes tangling and matting.
Step 2: Never Air-Dry
Air-drying is one of the biggest causes of matting in Poodles and Oodles. Always follow bathing with proper drying.
Step 3: Start Blow-Drying
Use a dryer on low speed and lukewarm temperature. Always test the airflow and heat to ensure it’s comfortable for your dog.Move the dryer continuously over different parts of the body for even drying and allow your dog to shake off excess water.
Tip: Place a dry, absorbent towel or non-slip mat on the bath floor or table. This prevents slipping and absorbs moisture from the feet.
Step 4: Brush While You Dry
Once your dog is about 90% dry, begin brushing using a pin brush or slicker brush.Brush gently against the grain (starting from the back and working toward the neck and head) while continuing to blow-dry.
This step is key—it straightens the coat and prevents knots from forming as the hair dries.
Step 5: Condition and Detangle
Lightly spray a leave-in conditioner to moisturise the coat and make brushing easier. An anti-detangling spray can also help reduce friction and prevent mats and knots.
Step 6: Finish With a Metal Comb
Use a metal comb and comb through the entire coat. When the comb glides effortlessly with no resistance, the coat is fully fluff dried.
The Result? A Healthy, Happy Coat
Fluff drying leaves your dog with:
A soft, plush, fluffy coat
Reduced matting and tangles
Improved comfort and skin health
Easier maintenance between professional grooming appointments
And of course—warm, fuzzy cuddles you’ll absolutely love.
Your dog will thank you for it. Fluff drying doesn’t just make your dog look good—it supports long-term coat health and sets them up for success between professional grooms.
